Power over Ethernet, (PoE) or “Active Ethernet” is a technology that integrates both power and data over a standard Category 5 Ethernet cable Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure
A Power over Ethernet system comprises of an Ethernet switch and a Power-Hub or a Power over Ethernet enabled Ethernet switch, which serves as the power source, and a number of Power over Ethernet enabled devices, which are the loads. The system uses a "Star Topology", where each load is connected to a dedicated port of the centralized Power-Hub. The Power-Hub is connected in series with an Ethernet Switch or Hub (cascaded), the Power-Hub inputs are connected to the Switch outputs, and the Power-Hub outputs are connected to the patch panel. Power is carried over the spare twisted pairs in a standard Category 5 Ethernet cable with negligible degradation of data communication.
Power over LAN
Power over LAN (PoL) is the name given to the implementation of Power over Ethernet by the company PowerDsine. Some 86% of the standard relates to PowerDsine technology.
The PowerDsine implementation of Power over Ethernet employs “mid-span” devices to inject the DC voltage. The “mid-span” device acts like a patch-panel, residing between a conventional Ethernet switch and the terminals. This is also referred to as a “Power Hub”. Power is added to the spare wires on the cable, with data uninterrupted.
The power delivered over the LAN infrastructure is automatically activated when a compatible terminal is identified and blocked to legacy devices that are not compatible. This is a central feature of the IEEE 802.3af standard which permits users to mix legacy and Power over Ethernet (PoE) compatible devices on the same network.
When a device is not compatible with Power over Ethernet an Active Splitter is installed. The splitter separates the DC voltage and the Ethernet data, into two separate outputs, terminating at a power port and a standard Ethernet connection (RJ-45 jack).
Axis Power over LAN
Axis Power over LAN (APoL) is the Axis implementation of Power over Ethernet by the company PowerDsine. Three Active Splitters are available, together with 1-port, 6-port and 12-port mid-spans. [see “Axis Power over LAN”].

Features
A Power over Ethernet Active Splitter separates data and power coming over a network cable. It enables products which lack built-in support for Power over Ethernet to receive both power and data from a network connection.
The Power over Ethernet (PoE) Tester, connected to an RJ-45 outlet, tests the cabling infrastructure for the presence of power, either IEEE802.3af standard-compliant or pre-standard. The PoE Tester identifies the existence and type of Power Sourcing Equipment (either end-span or mid-span) in your network
