UK number plates are retro reflective to infrared light. That is to say, the white or yellow portions of the number plate reflect infrared light effectively, the black lettering, however, does not.
This property is exploited for number plate capture. The area around the number plate is illuminated with infrared light, which is reflected back towards the camera unit. Inside the camera unit an infrared pass filter permits only the reflected infrared light to reach the camera, which then processes the image.
The camera views only infrared light and is not, therefore, affected by headlight glare. The number plate camera does not process visible light and an additional camera is required to provide an image of the vehicle or driver. [See ]
