Using the “arp” and “ping” commands to install an Axis Network Camera.
You are Here:- Home >> Products >> Network Cameras >> Installation on an IP-Network
Introduction
It is assumed that you have access to a suitable network, that TCP/IP networking is correctly installed and that a standard web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, version 4 or later, is installed on your computer.

Important
Do not use the default or IP address featured in the following examples when installing your Axis Network Camera. If in doubt, obtain an IP address from your Network Administrator. No special privileges are required for Windows 95/98, but you need Administrator Privileges for Windows NT/2000/XP, and Root privileges on UNIX.

The process of delivering data over a network is similar regardless of which network operating system is used, data is delivered from one network adaptor to another. In the examples that follow it is assumed that the camera is to be installed on a network employing a Microsoft Windows Operating system

Installing the Network Camera
Look on the underside of the camera. The physical address of the camera is the same as the serial number, for example 00408C5DEF62. [The first six numbers of the serial number, that is, 00-40-8c, are unique to Axis servers. The hardware address, or physical address is technically referred to as the “media access control address”, or MAC-address] Obtain an unused IP address from the Network Manager. In this example it is assumed that you have been allocated the IP address [ 192.168.0.2 ]. The “ARP Command” [Address Resolution Protocol] command is used to display or modify the ARP address tables mapping IP addresses to physical network addresses. [Note: the commands are not case-sensitive. In these examples they are expressed in uppercase or lowercase exactly the way they are expressed in Microsoft documentation.]

The ARP command displays or modifies the Address Resolution Protocol tables mapping IP addresses to physical addresses. The PING utility is used to verify the availability and reachability of other IP devices through TCP/IP networking. See Windows Command Utilities for the syntax of the commands.

  • Open the Command Prompt window on a “Windows” computer
  • Enter: arp –s 192.168.0.2 00-40-8c-5d-ef-62
  • Enter: ping 192.168.0.2 -t

You will now see:

“Request timed out….”

messages returned repeatedly within the Command Prompt window.

  • Connect an Ethernet cable to the Axis Network Camera and attach it to the network
  • Connect the external power supply to the Axis Network Camera and connect it to the mains supply

Approximately 10 to 15 seconds after connecting the power supply, the message:

“Reply from 192.168.0.2: bytes=32 time < 10ms TTL=64”

– or similar, is returned within the Command Prompt window. Ensure that the “Power Supply Indicator” is permanently lit and that the “Network Indicator” flashes intermittently. Exit “Ping” and close the Command Prompt window. The installation is now complete and you are ready to access the Axis Network Camera from a web browser.

To access the Axis Network Camera “Home Page”, start your browser and enter the IP address in the location field, for example, 192.168.0.2. Click the “Installation Wizard” link. The wizard guides you through the remaining set up procedures and will help you to configure your application.
